Classes and Workshops

Full list of workshops on offer is available upon request.

EARTHLY DELIGHTS - 2 day dyeing workshop Australian native plants, ochres and soil to colour natural fibres.

Content can vary from workshop to workshop depending on student needs and interests. In general, recording and cataloguing of samples and methods for future experimentation is a greater focus with more experienced dyers whereas the creation of a couple of nice lengths of cloth and use of shibori techniques seems to be more popular with less experienced dyers.

PLAYING ON THE SURFACE - Machine Embroidery workshops on various techniques from thread painting, applique, 3D, lace and basic ways of using your machine to create textures on the surface. This workshop can be offered as in depth units (i.e. 2 days just on lace) or as a variety of 'taster' classes.

FREE FORM CLOTH
Manipulate the cloth by tucking, pleating, gathering, smocking, padding, darting and stitching over objects to create a two or three dimensional base for embroidery. Wire and other objects can be incorporated to give the piece a skeletal structure to build upon.

Stitching/Embroidery can be decorative, structural or both.

PAINTERLEY EMBROIDERY
Using interesting background materials, an original design source (photo, postcard etc.) and with reference to the works of one of your favorite painters, we will develop and work on an embroidered art piece.

Particular attention will be paid to the selection of fabrics and threads as the embroidery will be used to highlight certain areas. The design will be interpreted in the style of the artist chosen and analysed in terms of brush strokes, use of light and colour and general mood created.

Backgrounds will be built up using collage style techniques, using layers and trapping small pieces of fabrics, fleece and chopped yarns under a sheer fabric.
