See other: Insects
The webs that we spin around us to create comfortable, safe, snug environments are often those which end up entrapping us.
I wanted to create an exquisite dress that will cause some to shudder upon closer inspection. This work is partly a statement against human tendencies to endow animals with either good or bad traits as they perceive the animal’s role in relation to themselves rather than the greater scheme of things. The other thing that informs this work are the fairy tales I read as a child which inspired me to try to stitch doll’s clothes in rose petals and dead insects wings.
This dress was constructed using machine embroidery techniques on a water soluble background. Insects and cobwebs were created separately and then stitched together.
Created for and a finalist in the Powerhouse Museum International Lace for Fashion Awards, Sydney, 2000. Also exhibited at the Wearable Art - Knitting & Stitches show, London, 2003
